Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. While a small child, Ford battled obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by the word association. Ford began acting during her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her set in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
